Crop-Types Proposed:

Where approved or acceptable, GroPower proposes to promote the use of the following:

1. For BioDiesel:
Oilseed for production of vegetable oils, for conversion into BioDiesel

  • Jatropha Curcas; (In areas where this plant is accepted - not in South Africa).
  • OilPalm; (Coastal and sub-tropical areas, NE KZN Province/ Mozambique etc).
  • Coconut Palm; (NE Cost and Mozambique/ Tanzania/ Madagascar/ Kenya/ Angola).
  • Moringa, a multi-use plant;
    (In most frost-free environs).
  • Other Oil-seed crops requiring an annual replanting can also be considered, where there is an adequacy of suitable fertile land, irrigation water and other related logistic infratsructures (Soya, Safflower, Sunflower, Canola, Peanuts, Rapeseed for example).
2. For BioEthanol:
  • Sugar Cane and Cassava and (where permitted, Maize and other grains) for the production of BioEthanol.
3. Waste BioMass utilisation:

Various residual or waste biomass products can also be utilised for direct combustion to produce process steam and/or for conversion into Electrical energy, for process plant usage or for general electrical use, or supply into a local grid.

Advanced Pyrolisation processes take this to a new level so that the energy recuvery per Kg of BioMass is enhanced siginiucantly above that recuvered via simple combustion porocesses.

Other crop-residue usage;
Comments can be found on the page dedicated to "The Bigger Picture", on this website.

Timber-growing in Southern Africa produces  under-utillised quantities of Brushwood, Trim-watse, Bark, Roots and stumps (when old root-stock is remeived for replanting with fresh  seedlings or newer varieties).

The companion website for Amandla Resource Development has an extensive review of this commodity, as a primary resource and as feedstock for a BioMass-to-Energy model that is being pursued by Amandla, in association with Thuthuka Group.

4. Food Security:
    Inter-row cropping
will also be promoted, for the
   parallel production of needed food-crops, for local
   consumption and also for produce markets.

5. Downstream Bye-Products:
    Pelletised waste BioMass (Filter Presse and Seed-
    cake) may be utilised as animal feed stock or can
    be considered for use a BioMass fuel pellets for
    heating and generation of steam and Electrical
    power.

5. Glycerin arising as waste or bye-product from the
    Esterification process for BioDiesel conversion can
    be sold commercially or through value-add, can be
    converted to soaps and other commercial products.

6. Waste BioMass can also be utilised, at source, for
    the manufacture of Organic Fertiliser, to improve
    plantation soil texture and quality and reduce
    reliance on chemical fertilisers.
